How much omega-3 does your dog actually need.
Omega-3 fatty acids are among the most useful nutritional supplements you can give your dog. Dose matters. Giving "some fish oil" is not the same as providing an effective amount of omega-3.
The two omega-3 fatty acids that matter most are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). These are the active marine omega-3s linked to healthy skin, joints, cardiovascular function, kidneys, brain health and a balanced inflammatory response.
Omega-3 needs depend on what you are trying to achieve.
A healthy dog on omega-3 for everyday maintenance does not need the same amount as a dog needing targeted nutritional support. Published veterinary nutrition figures use roughly the following amounts of combined EPA plus DHA per kilogram of body weight per day.

The key words are EPA plus DHA. Many supplements advertise total "fish oil" or even "total omega-3", but those numbers do not tell you how much active EPA and DHA your dog receives. For the difference between the two, read EPA vs DHA.

Why EPA and DHA matter.
Inflammation is not always bad. It is part of the body's normal repair and immune response. The problem is persistent, poorly regulated inflammation. Modern pet diets often carry far more omega-6 than marine omega-3. EPA and DHA give the body the building blocks it uses to regulate inflammatory signalling.
Adequate marine omega-3 is useful for dogs showing:

Why not just use flaxseed or chia.
